There’s something about sitting around a fire that makes camping feel complete. The stories, the warmth, and just being with flames are hard to replace. But traditional campfires come with smoke, cleanup, fire restrictions, and the hassle of carrying and lighting the wood.

That’s where a portable fire pit like The Howl R1 becomes a viable option, promising to deliver the atmosphere of a real campfire in a compact propane design that can travel anywhere. But does it offer a bonfire experience or is it better viewed as the ultimate portable campfire for outdoor adventures? Keep reading to find out.

First Impressions of the Howl R1 Portable Fire Pit

The biggest challenge with camping gear is not finding something useful; it’s finding something worth the space it takes up. The Howl Campfires’ portable fire pit is made for campers who want the experience of a fire without sacrificing storage room thanks to compact design (around the size of a shoebox). Weighing in at around 10 lbs, it’s easy to pack and carry into a truck, RV, or overlanding setup.

The folding Gullwing legs make the setup more efficient. They allow you to quickly create a stable fire spot once you arrive at camp. It’s the kind of portable fire pit that doesn’t feel like extra baggage, it feels like a practical addition to your adventure gear.

The Campfire Feel Without The Campfire Hassle

The best part of any campfire isn’t it the fire, but the moments that happen around it. The Howl R1 brings this feeling without having to deal with smoke blowing into your face or the smell following you home.

Unlike traditional wood fires, with the Howl R1 you don’t have to worry about collecting firewood, dealing with sparks, or cleaning up ash. The UL-certified propane design makes it a practical option in areas where propane fires are allowed during certain fire restrictions.

Recreating the Campfire Experience

The biggest question when it comes to portable firepits is whether they can recreate the feeling of the real thing. The Howl R1 makes a strong first impression thanks to 32 inch flame height, A-Flame burner, and Flex Dome Windscreen that keeps the flames exposed instead of hiding them inside a deep bowl. This makes the fire look more natural while controllable.

How Much Heat Can You Expect From The Howl R1?

A big flame doesn’t always mean big heat. Thats where expectations matter with the Howl R1. I was genuinely surprised by how much warmth it puts out for its size especially when running at lower settings. Its wind resistant design also helps keep the flame consistent when conditions aren’t perfect.

Some campers might feel that the flame looks more impressive than the actual heat coverage it provides. The compact size is part of what makes it portable, but it also means it won’t warm a large campsite like a full-sized fire pit. I’d see the R1 as a better fit for small groups of around 2-4 people who want a comfortable campfire companion rather than a primary heat source.

Why The Howl R1 Feels Built For The Long Haul

Durability matters as much as performance for outdoor gear. This portable firepit doesn’t feel like a disposable camping accessory you use for a season and forget about. Built with 304 stainless steel, aircraft aluminum, and brass components, it offers a rugged feel that can keep up with my adventures.

The press brake frame and tank stabilizing design add to its sturdy construction especially for campers who take their gear into rougher environments. The firepit is designed with repairability in mind so small signs of use don’t mean the end of its lifespan.
